Forensic Engineer

Mark Burns is a Forensic Engineer at Aperture (formerly WEXCO). Mark’s primary role has been investigating premises liability, motor vehicle, and construction incidents to ultimately determine how and why they occurred. Investigations generally include analyzing applicable building codes, regulations, and industry safety standards. During his time with Aperture, Mark has investigated over 10,000 separate incident cases on behalf of both plaintiffs and defendants, been deposed as an expert witness on almost 1,000 occasions, and provided expert testimony at trial in State and Federal courts in California and across the country on around 250 occasions.

Mark earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia in 2003 and a law degree from Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles, California in 2009. He is a licensed general building contractor, certified building inspector, certified residential property manager, and licensed attorney in the State of California. He also holds numerous other certifications including being nationally certified as an accessibility inspector/plans examiner, a certified English XL Tribometrist, a certified school security officer, and a certified playground safety inspector. Mark is a member of many trade associations and organizations involved with voluntary consensus standards, such as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
